Clarification

The function was a gloomy and dimly-lit room found in the schoolhouse dungeons.[1] The shadowy walls were lined with shelves of large drinking glass jars filled with slimy, revolting things, such as $.25 of animals and plants, floating in potions of varying colours.[2] Snape's collection grew over time - in 1994 Harry Potter noted in that location were more jars than in 1992,[3] and by 1996, in that location were hundreds of them,[2] fifty-fifty though Snape was no longer teaching the subject field of potions. The office had a fireplace.[1] In a corner, in that location was a closet containing Snape's individual stock of potions ingredients.[3] In 1997, the office also contained a tabular array, used for Harry'due south detention of sorting out records, just it was unknown if it had been there before.[4]

The office was sealed with a spell only wizards could break.[5]

History

1992

"The shadowy walls were lined with shelves of large drinking glass jars, in which floated all manner of revolting things Harry didn't really want to know the name of at the moment. The fireplace was dark and empty. Snape closed the door and turned to look at them."
— Snape leading Harry and Ron into his office in 1992[src]

Harry Potter and Ron Weasley in Snape's role after being seen by Muggles driving a flying Ford Anglia

Harry Potter and Ron Weasley first entered Snape's function on 1 September, 1992. Snape led them at that place after he defenseless them when they had flown the Flight Ford Anglia to Hogwarts. They were chilled when they reached the room, and the fireplace was cold and empty. Because he was non authorised to punish them, he and then left them there and fetched Professor McGonagall, who lit a fire and asked them to explain. Professor Dumbledore joined them and decided not to expel the boys. Even so, Ron and Harry were non allowed to return to the feast and had pumpkin juice and sandwiches that McGonagall summoned in Snape's part before they went to bed.[1]

Hermione Granger stole bicorn horn and boomslang skin from Snape's office in 1992 for the Polyjuice Potion. She slipped out of a Potions course while Harry diverted Snape.[6]

1994

"Snape had acquired a few more slimy horrible things in jars since last time, all standing on shelves behind his desk, glinting in the firelight and adding to the threatening temper."
— Harry viewing Snape's role in 1994[src]

Harry and Snape in his part after the former is caught in Hogsmeade without permission

Snape caught Harry Potter after Draco Malfoy had seen him in Hogsmeade without the consent of a guardian and brought him to his role. Harry denied that he had been to Hogsmeade and accused Malfoy of hallucinations. They had a confrontation about Harry'due south father James Potter and Snape then confiscated the Marauder'due south Map and a bag from Zonko's Joke Shop. When the map coldly insulted him and showed the Marauders' nicknames, Snape called Remus Lupin and immediately accused him that Harry had acquired the map straight "from the manufacturers." Lupin replied that to him the paper just looked simply similar an ordinary Zonko's product. Ron Weasley burst in at that moment and claimed that he had given Harry everything Snape had establish and Lupin declared that this had officially closed the case and then led the boys out of the function.[3]

1995

Severus Snape: "So I requite you fair alarm, Potter, pint-sized glory or not — if I catch you lot breaking into my role ane more than time —"
Harry Potter: "I haven't been anywhere near your function!"
Severus Snape: "Don't lie to me. Boomslang skin. Gillyweed. Both come up from my individual stores, and I know who stole them."
— Snape accusing Harry of stealing ingredients from his function[src]

Bartemius Crouch Junior, bearded as Alastor "Mad-Heart" Moody, stole ingredients for the Polyjuice Potion from Snape'southward office during the school year he spent at Hogwarts.[seven] Harry saw him on the Marauder's Map, but thought it was his father Barty Crouch, Snr.[v] In the same yr, Dobby stole gillyweed for Harry earlier the second task of the Triwizard Tournament. As the role had been locked with a spell that only a wizard could interruption,[5] Snape suspected Harry to be the culprit on all 3 counts of robbery.[8] It was just when Barty confessed under the influence of Veritaserum that lifted these suspicions on Potter.[vii]

1996-1997

"Get out, get out, I don't want to run across you in this office always again!"
— Severus Snape screaming at Harry Potter, after Harry viewed his worst retention[src]

In January 1996, Snape started teaching Harry Occlumency in his office.[ii] A Pensieve was on the desk on these occasions. During one of these lessons, when Snape was called away, Harry saw Snape's worst memory inside the Pensieve. When Snape found out, he threw him out and yelled that he didn't want to encounter Harry in his function ever again, going as far as to throw a jar of dead cockroaches that barely missed the back of Harry's caput.[9]

Snape kept his old part in the dungeons even after he became the Defence Confronting the Night Arts teacher and thus had a classroom several floors above in Harry Potter's 6th yr. Harry had come there for detention twice, one time when he got cheeky against Snape during their showtime lesson of the year,[10] and second for every Sabbatum until the terminate of the school year afterwards he cursed Draco Malfoy with Sectumsempra.[4] The first detention was for him to sort out rotten and practiced Flobberworms for potions, in which he was non permitted to apply protective gloves;[xi] the second detention required him to clear out former cobwebbed boxes of files about the wrongdoings of the Marauders at Hogwarts.[4] Throughout the year, Snape had repeatedly summoned Draco into the function in the hopes of assisting the immature male child in assassinate Albus Dumbledore, to which Draco ignored, something Snape noted that whatever other students would non get off of and then easily.[12]

On the night of the Battle of the Astronomy Tower, Luna Lovegood and Hermione Granger kept watch in front end of Snape'south office until Professor Flitwick sprinted down the passageway and into the room. Snape Stunned Flitwick, told Luna and Hermione to look after him and disappeared.[13]

When Snape was promoted to headmaster, he finally vacated this office and moved to the other i.[14]
